Friends in the News: Wowwed by Wovoka

Volunteer Levi enjoys the rush of the river and the sun on his skin
in the proposed Wovoka Wilderness.
Shaaron Netherton, fearless leader/Executive Director of Friends of Nevada Wilderness, spoke about the Wovoka Wilderness bill in Lyon County with the Nevada Appeal and Associated Press.

“I think it's a good faith effort on the part of everyone. Everybody
gave a little bit and that's how we get things done in Nevada. It
               was a good bipartisan effort.”

The bill will be re-introduced for the new Congress, along with the Pine Forest Recreation Enhancement Act, later this quarter. You can read the full article here: http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20121230/NEWS/121229825/1070&ParentProfile=1058

Friends in the News: Gold Butte

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has an extensive piece on Gold Butte and the data Friends of Nevada Wilderness collected via a poll of Clark County voters, done by independent information-gathering agency Moore Information. You can read the whole article here!

The poll showed that 66 percent of Clark County voters support the establishment of a national conservation area between Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument just across the Nevada border in Arizona. Just 20 percent of those surveyed opposed the idea.
Longtime conservationist John Hiatt is on the board of directors for Friends of Nevada Wilderness, [an] advocacy group that sponsored the poll. He's hoping the survey results finally spur some action.
"We've been hearing for months if not years now that legislation is imminent, but it never seems to quite get there," Hiatt said.

Friends in the News: Executive Director Shaaron on the Pine Forest Bill

Shaaron Netherton, Executive Director for Friends of Nevada Wilderness, spoke with Mike Clifford about partisan politics when working towards the Pine Forest Bill's introduction. From FoxReno.com:
Shaaron Netherton, executive director of Friends of Nevada
Wilderness, says the Pine Forest measure is the result of what she calls "common-sense planning" involving both regional and local people to ensure that the concerns of sportsmen, ranchers and landowners are included along with the goal of protecting wildlife.
